Where Math Meets Practicality

Continuing to Solve Real Problems — With Math

In the last post, we discussed the spiffy model we had created called Humpty, that is, ALM.  What if one day you saw a picture that looked like this: Wow… that somewhat looks like COVID-19 cases, right?  The same general pattern occurs: it bounces up, levels off (mostly), and then shoots up again.  Except… it’s

Solving a Real Problem — with math.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a world-changing madhouse of a contagious disease.  People got sick and shared the virus with others, and there we go, off to the races.  I mean hospital. We have mathematical models for disease spread, so of course we could predict the number of cases!  It’s a tough problem but not unsolvable.

About Pi Mathematicians

About Us Many of you reading this have taken math at some point in your academic career and at the end said, “So?! I can solve for x.  Wow.  Isn’t that neat?”  Or even if you took advanced calculus, you ended up saying, “Whoopee, I can integrate!  Nifty!”  The most interesting problems are often the
